Introducing Our Volunteer Spotlight: A Passionate Plant Enthusiast!

June 27, 2023

At Turtle Bay, we are fortunate to have a dedicated team of volunteers who contribute their time and energy to make our park a wonder-full place for visitors. Each month, we shine a spotlight on one exceptional volunteer. This month, we are thrilled to introduce you to Kelly WIlliams, a rockstar on our volunteer team who just earned his 2000-hour volunteer pin! With unwavering dedication, he has committed himself to Turtle Bay Nursery for an impressive six and a half years, devoting two days each week to enhance the beauty and experience of the Turtle Bay Nursery and Gardens.

Kelly's horticultural journey sprouted from a genuine love for the great outdoors and all things green. With a background in forestry management and a remarkable 45-year career at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), he has always been connected to nature. Having lived in Redding since 1978, with most of his time being spent in nature, Kelly has become well acquainted with the region's flora and fauna. It was at Turtle Bay Nursery where Kelly's green thumb truly flourished. As he fine-tuned his own yard, he couldn't resist taking a deeper dive into the captivating world of horticulture. Hungry for more plant knowledge and eager to surround himself with fellow enthusiasts, he wholeheartedly joined the team as a cherished volunteer.

For Kelly, what sets the horticulture team at Turtle Bay apart is the commitment to cultivating and selling plants that are specifically suited for the Reddings’ unique climate.  Kelly proudly shared that everything they sell is grown right on-site, from seeds, cuttings, or divisions. By providing plants that are accustomed to the heat and dry conditions, Kelly ensures that customers have the best chances of success in their gardens.

When asked about his favorite aspect of being a volunteer, Kelly expressed delight in the entire process of plant cultivation, from sowing the seeds to repotting, and eventually selling the mature plants. But what truly fulfills him is sharing his expertise, helping customers discover their perfect plant match, and witnessing their spaces come to life. Kelly's dedication to ensuring customers find the right plant for the right spot is evident in his interactions, and he genuinely enjoys seeing people improve their living spaces, both indoors and out. Additionally, Kelly leads garden walks at Turtle Bay, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the gardens, gain inspiration, and learn more about sustainable and drought-tolerant gardening and landscaping practices.

Kelly's favorite plant, without a doubt, is the Blue Sage, a California native salvia that blooms profusely. Its vibrant colors, alluring fragrance, and low-maintenance care embody his passion for the beauty found within California's natural landscapes. Kelly recommends this plant for your yard to attract butterflies… it’s a butterfly magnet!

Kelly emphasized that to volunteer for Turtle Bay Horticulture, you have the opportunity to learn about plants and gain knowledge before engaging with visitors, ensuring a rewarding experience for everyone involved. Additionally, he highlighted Turtle Bay's supportive environment and the overwhelming positivity shared among the staff. Volunteering at Turtle Bay allows individuals to feel like an integral part of a much bigger picture, contributing to the community while learning and growing alongside like-minded individuals.

Kelly has become a highly knowledgeable volunteer, attracting customers who eagerly seek his guidance at the Nursery whenever he's there. Whether you need advice on the perfect garden layout or tips for nurturing your plants at home, he's got you covered. We are truly grateful for volunteers like Kelly, who help make Turtle Bay a remarkable place for everyone to enjoy.

Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, stop by the Turtle Bay Nursery. Say hi to Kelly, explore our stunning selection, and create the garden of your dreams!
